CELESTE LEGASPI
Celeste's career began with lead roles in plays of the Philippine Educational Theatre Association, the CCP Dance Company and CCP's Tanghalang Pilipino. One of her notable performances was in Lino Brocka's adaptation of Alberto Tolentino's 'Cavort with Angels' (1967). In 1988 she made a special appearance in the hit musical 'Katy!' Legaspi has made numerous singles and long-playing albums. Some of her trademark songs are Saranggola ni 'Pepe,' 'Tuliro,' 'Gaano Kita Kamahal,' and 'Mamang Sorbetero.' Among the many awards she has received are: Outstanding Performance award from the World Popular Song Festival in Tokyo, Japan, where she rendered Puso Mong Nagmamahal (1976), Tinig Awards for live entertainment (1977, 1979, and 1990), and Aliw Awards for Entertainer of the Year (1978). In 1986 Legaspi spearheaded the foundation of Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM) that aimed to promote and propagate original Pilipino music.
